At DrainMaintain, we were recently contacted by a homeowner in Colchester who was experiencing a blocked drain that had gradually become worse over time. Water was draining away very slowly, and despite several attempts to clear the blockage, the problem kept returning.
Our experienced drainage engineers attended the property to carry out a full inspection and identify the underlying cause of the drainage issue.
After carefully assessing the drainage system, we discovered that the property’s original cast iron drain pipes had deteriorated significantly due to age.
Cast iron pipework was commonly used in older properties but, over time, it can corrode, crack, and become rough internally. This allows debris, grease, and other waste materials to collect inside the pipework, eventually leading to recurring blockages and poor drainage.
Rather than simply clearing the blockage, we explained to the customer that replacing the damaged pipework would provide a far more reliable, long-term solution.
We recommended removing the ageing cast iron drainage system and replacing it with modern, durable pipework designed to provide improved water flow and greater reliability.
As part of the project, we also installed a brand-new drainage gully to improve surface water drainage around the property. A correctly installed gully helps collect rainwater efficiently while reducing the risk of future blockages and keeping the surrounding area clean and free from standing water.
During our inspection, we also identified a problem with the property’s mains water pipe.
To ensure the customer’s water supply remained safe and operational, our engineers carried out a temporary repair on the same day. This prevented further leakage and protected the property while we prepared to complete the permanent drainage works the following day.
We returned the next day to complete the project.
Our team carefully excavated and removed the damaged cast iron pipework before installing a new, modern drainage system using high-quality replacement pipes. The new drainage system was designed to improve flow, reduce the risk of future blockages, and provide a long-lasting solution for the homeowner.
Once the new pipework and drainage gully had been installed, we thoroughly tested the system to ensure everything was operating correctly before reinstating the work area and leaving the property clean and tidy.
By the end of the project, the customer’s blocked drain in Colchester had been fully resolved. The old, deteriorating pipework had been replaced with a modern drainage system that will provide reliable performance for many years to come.
Most importantly, the customer was delighted with the result and pleased to have a drainage system they could rely on without worrying about recurring blockages or failing pipework.
